Rosemary: From Protection to Remembrance - Exploring the Superstitions and Traditions Surrounding this Aromatic Herb

Rosemary is an aromatic herb with a long history of being used in traditional medicine and culinary practices. However, it is also steeped in superstition and old wives' tales. As a mother that loves a touch of magic in my everyday, I have come across many traditions and beliefs about rosemary that are passed down from generation to generation.

One of the most common superstitions surrounding rosemary is its association with remembrance. It is believed that the herb has the power to improve memory and recall. This association with memory is so strong that rosemary is often used at funerals, memorial services, and other events that honor the dead. Additionally, Shakespeare's play "Hamlet" featured Ophelia giving out sprigs of rosemary as a symbol of remembrance, love, and fidelity.

Another popular belief is that rosemary offers protection against evil spirits, jealousy, and other negative energies. In fact, many hospitals used to place rosemary near the entrance to help spirits pass over and to offer protection to the patients inside. Some people would also hang sprigs of rosemary around the home or burn it to purify the air and rid the space of negative energies.

There are also several superstitions associated with rosemary and love. It is believed that wearing rosemary can ward off the evil eye and prevent infidelity. In some cultures, rosemary is given as a gift to newlyweds to ensure fidelity and happiness in the marriage. Additionally, it is said that sleeping with rosemary under your pillow can bring blessed dreams.

Interestingly, there is an old saying that goes "where rosemary flourishes, the woman rules the home." While the origins of this saying are unknown, it is believed that it may have something to do with the herb's association with protection and strength.

In Australia, rosemary is an ideal herb to grow in dry climates, and it has become a popular choice for gardeners and cooks alike. While many of the superstitions surrounding rosemary may be just that - superstitions - there is no denying the many benefits of this wonderful herb. Its refreshing scent, flavorful taste, and numerous health benefits make it a must-have in any kitchen or garden. And, of course, it is always nice to have a bit of extra protection against negative energy, just in case ;)
